Keep the character of a slate roof intact

Natural slate gives a pitched roof a crisp, traditional finish and offers long service when the support and fixing details are sound. Its relatively low weight can suit both older buildings and modern designs, subject to the roof itself. We inspect slate roofing in Newark for cracked, slipped or missing pieces, but we don't stop at the obvious gap. Worn fixings, weak battens or tired underlay can cause the same defect to return. By checking the surrounding covering and hidden components, we can judge whether isolated slate replacement will restore the roof or merely postpone wider work.

Correct overlap matters as much as good slate

Slates rely on the right headlap, gauge and secure fixing to keep out wind-driven rain. We set them out evenly and pay close attention where the roof changes direction or meets another surface. Ridges, valleys, abutments and penetrations need neat detailing because small gaps there can let in surprising amounts of water. Where most slates and supporting layers remain sound, targeted repairs can be sensible. If age, widespread movement or failing underlay affects the whole slope, we'll explain the case for full renewal and set out the options in writing.
