Emergency Roofer in Newark
Storm damage or water coming in? We make the roof safe and watertight as quickly as we can, then come back to carry out a permanent repair.
Open 7am to 6pm, seven days a week
When rain is coming through the ceiling or the wind has taken tiles off the roof, you need someone who will pick up the phone and deal with it. As your emergency roofer in Newark, we make the roof safe and stop the water getting in as quickly as we can, then come back to put it right properly. Will Hartley has been roofing for over 20 years, so storm damage is familiar ground.
We are open from 7am to 6pm, seven days a week. For anything urgent, call 01636 499231 rather than emailing, so we can talk it through and plan the visit straight away.
What happens when you call
Every emergency job follows the same three steps. The aim is to protect your home first, then fix the cause, not to rush a patch that fails again next time it rains.
1. Make it safe
The first job is safety. We check for anything that could fall, such as loose tiles, slipped ridge tiles, a damaged chimney pot or a gutter hanging off the fascia, and make it secure or take it down. If water is coming in, we find where it is getting through before doing anything else.
2. Stop the water getting in
Next, we make the roof watertight. Depending on the damage, that might mean refitting or replacing the tiles and slates that have blown off, re-dressing lead flashing that has lifted, or putting temporary weatherproofing over the damaged area until the full repair can be done. On a flat roof, we seal the split or failed section so it holds until we can repair or replace the covering.
3. Put it right properly
Once the weather allows and the right materials are in, we carry out the permanent repair. For many storm jobs, that is a straightforward roof repair: new tiles or slates, ridge tiles re-bedded, flashing replaced. You get a written quote first, so you know what the permanent work involves and what it costs.
What to do while you wait
These simple steps limit the damage and keep everyone safe until we arrive:
- Keep clear of the danger area. Stay away from the ground below loose tiles, a damaged chimney or hanging guttering, and keep children and pets inside.
- Protect your belongings. Move furniture, electronics and anything valuable away from the leak, and catch drips in buckets or bowls.
- Mind the electrics. If water is near light fittings, sockets or the consumer unit, switch off the power to that area if it is safe to do so.
- Take photos. Photograph the damage inside and out from a safe place. Your insurer will want to see them.
- Stay off the roof. Never climb onto a roof or up a ladder in wind or rain. That is our job.
Storm damage and your insurance
Storm damage is one of the most common reasons people call an emergency roofer, particularly after high winds across Nottinghamshire. It is worth keeping an eye on the Met Office weather warnings when a storm is forecast, and taking a look at your roof from the ground once the wind has dropped.
Many home insurance policies cover sudden storm damage, but most exclude wear and tear or damage caused by poor maintenance. Check your policy and contact your insurer early. The Association of British Insurers has plain-English guidance on what home insurance usually covers. We can explain what we found on the roof and set out the work and the price in writing on our quote, which gives you something clear to discuss with your insurer.
Common storm and emergency roof problems
Blown or slipped tiles and slates
High winds get under tiles and slates that are already loose, and one gap soon becomes several. We replace them with matching materials wherever possible and re-fix the tiles around them.
Leaking chimneys and lifted flashing
Chimneys take the full force of the wind, and lead flashing can lift or tear, letting water run straight down into the house. Our chimney repairs and leadwork service covers everything from re-dressing flashing to making a damaged stack safe.
Flat roof splits and leaks
Older felt flat roofs often split or blister in storms and heavy rain. We make them watertight in an emergency, and if the roof has reached the end of its life we can replace it with a long-lasting GRP fibreglass or EPDM rubber roof. See our flat roofing page for more.
Damaged gutters and fascias
Wind and heavy rain can pull gutters loose or overload them, so water pours down the walls and into the roof edge. We refit or replace damaged fascias, soffits and guttering so rainwater is carried away properly again.
From emergency fix to permanent repair
A temporary fix buys you time, but it is not the end of the job. We come back to carry out the permanent repair once conditions allow, and we check the rest of the roof while we are up there, so you know whether anything else is likely to cause trouble. If the storm has shown that the roof is failing across the board, we will talk you through whether repairs still make sense or whether a new roof is the better long-term answer.
We are fully insured, and our work carries guarantees of up to 10 years depending on the job. We confirm the guarantee on your written quote.

Emergency Roofing: your questions answered
Can you come out the same day?
We are open from 7am to 6pm, seven days a week, and we get to urgent jobs as quickly as we can. How soon depends on the weather and how many roofs have been hit, especially after a big storm. Call 01636 499231 rather than emailing, so we can talk it through and plan the visit straight away.
What counts as a roofing emergency?
Water coming through a ceiling, tiles or slates blown off, a damaged or leaning chimney, lead flashing lifted by the wind, or a gutter hanging off the house. If anything could fall and hurt someone, or rain is getting in, treat it as urgent and call us. Smaller problems can wait for a normal roof repair visit.
Will my home insurance cover storm damage to my roof?
Many home insurance policies cover sudden storm damage, but most exclude wear and tear or poor maintenance. Check your policy wording and speak to your insurer early. We can explain what we found on the roof and set out the work and price in writing on our quote, which helps when you talk to them.
Can you fix the roof permanently in one visit?
Sometimes. If the damage is small and we have matching materials, we can often repair it properly on the first visit. Where the damage is bigger, or the weather makes safe work impossible, we make the roof watertight first and then come back to carry out the permanent repair.
What should I do before you arrive?
Stay safe first. Keep away from the area below any loose tiles, move valuables and electrics away from the water, catch drips in buckets and turn off lights or sockets near a leak. Take photos of the damage for your insurer. Do not climb onto the roof or up a ladder in wind or rain.
